Visual Storytelling

Created for Kafe asko, eta ona, this illustration accompanies a short story by Naia Arantzamendi, developed during a residency as part of the Geuretik Sortuak initiative — a collective project where writers were invited to create stories inspired by different towns across the Basque Country, later compiled in Hamaika irakurtzeko jaioak.

The story emerges from Baigorri, where Naia connected with local people and explored themes of generational change, identity and ways of living. At its center is Maixan, a young woman reflecting on her life choices between urban life and her roots.

Holding a cup of coffee becomes a moment of pause — a space for reflection — which guided the development of the illustration. Elements like the small white house with a red roof, inspired by Baigorri, or the river subtly woven into the composition, connect the piece to its territory. Other details, such as flowers and birds, echo moments and metaphors from the story, while the interplay between hair, trees and landscape hints at ideas of roots, memory and belonging.

• SCROLL TO EXPLORE

I started with a brainstorming phase exploring different concepts for the cover. After reviewing them with Naia, we selected the idea of a girl holding a cup of coffee with the landscape integrated into the composition.
